Wheel Mandrels

Wheel mandrels are precision machined tools used to hold a wheel in place when using a drill or dremel tool as shown in the bottom picture.  This is necessary for several of the wheel modifications you will be performing.

The standard wheel mandrel (top picture) provides a basic positioning of the wheel in a drill.  It can then be sanded and polished while spinning.

The benefits of the ProWheel Mandrel (2nd picture) are:

bullet Accurately machined shaft allows for precision use in any drill chuck or dremel type tool.

bullet Step-down on shaft allows BSA wheels to be mounted with the spokes facing the drill chuck which simplifies work on the inside edge of the wheel tread.

bullet The Pro Wheel Mandrel, as opposed to the standard wheel mandrel which requires a screwdriver, has a knurled thumb screw for greater ease of use in mounting a wheel.

bullet The screw can be replaced should it become lost or bent.

The Pro-Hub Tool is a precision machined tool used to improve the accuracy of the wheel bore and wheel hub.

The benefits of the Pro-Hub Tool are:

bullet Ensures proper axle fit into the wheel bore by reaming undersized wheel bores.  This is a very important alignment procedure as it allows the car to sit evenly on all 4 wheels with equal distances from the axle to the track.  (Imagine a car that has one wheel riding high.  The car would have a slight bounce going down the track and be very unstable)

bullet Ensures accurate rotation by squaring the inner wheel hub to the wheel bore for proper mounting on a wheel mandrel.

bullet Reduces the primary friction contact point between the wheel and the car body by accurately and easily coning the inside wheel hub.

Wow! What nice, shiny, straight axles you have.  Yeah, right!  Ok, dull straight axles.  Guess again! Just put your axles in a drill, spin and you will see what we mean.

The Pro-Axle Press will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by performing the following critical procedures on nail type axles:

bullet Axle Straightening- Ensures accurate wheel tracking by creating absolutely straight axles and improved wheel tracking equals greater speed.

bullet Axle Rounding- Ensures accurate wheel rotation by creating absolutely round axle shafts.  Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed.

bullet Head Squaring- Ensures proper wheel rotation by squaring the axle head to the axle shaft.  Improved wheel rotation equals greater speed.

bullet Precision Finishing- More consistent sanding and polishing due to straight axle shaft.

bullet Raised Wheel and Alignment Adjustments- When it is necessary to purposely bend an axle to raise a front wheel (Get "Domination By Design" and we will show you why) or make an alignment adjustment, the Pro-Axle press serves as a clamping device for holding the axle while making the bend.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro-Axle Press.

Note: The Pro-Axle Press is designed for use on BSA and PineCar nail-type axles.  The press is not intended for use with rod-type or screw-type axles used by the Awanas or Royal Rangers.

Easily, the most important pinewood derby speed tip to come out in the last few years.  If you want to dominate your pinewood derby race, you simply must incorporate the Rail Rider technique.  It has been a part of every one of our track records and of course, our Pinewood Derby National Championship cars!!!!!

bullet The idea behind the rail rider method is to maintain light, consistent contact between the center guide rail and one of the front wheels, heretofore known as the dominant front wheel.  The other wheel is generally off the track in a 3 wheel touching format although this technique can be used in a 4 wheel on the track car as well.

bullet By maintaining constant, light contact with one front wheel, one can avoid any contact between the guide rail and the more important rear wheels caused by speed wobbles.  These are hard, quick contacts with the weight bearing wheels which cause significant speed losses.

bullet The slight contact between the guide rail and the dominant front wheel also causes friction but it is minimal in comparison to these hard hits taken by the rear wheels.

bullet We cannot completely avoid these hard contacts and therefore must choose the least speed killing method, Rail Rider.   Regardless of one’s skepticism, one cannot deny the impact of this method on times for the best builders in the country in their national pinewood derby league cars.

See detailed instructions on using the Rail Rider Tool.

As you look at your Pinewood Derby Wheels, the first thing you may notice is that they are black and have Made in the USA and Boy Scouts of America on them.  Good.  The second thing you may notice is that they are round.  Wrong!!!

The Pro-Shaver XT-2 is a precision device that will "shave time" off your pinewood derby runs by:

bullet Creating a wheel which is perfectly round and true to the wheel bore.

bullet Removing the primary mold mark on the wheel surface as well as other deep scratches.

bullet Creating a smooth outer surface for more precise surface sanding.

bullet Truing the inside edge of the wheel by removing molding mark and excess material.

For greater ease of use, the Pro-Shaver XT-2 is equipped with screw-adjustable blade depth.  Just turn the know to raise or lower the blade.

Note: The Pro-Shaver XT-2 is intended for use on wheels made  of a hard plastic such as those included in kits offered by BSA, PineCar, Royal Rangers, S&W, and Royal Ambassadors.  It is not intended for use on wheels made of a soft plastic such as those offered by Awana and PinePro.

A Pro-Hub Tool (not included) is required for use with the Pro-Shaver XT-2.

Who Moved My Wheels?

In some pinewood derby races, extended wheel bases are allowed, and if so in your race, you had better enlist this speed tip or choose to just be competitive.

The Pro-Body Tool will improve the speed of your pinewood derby car by:

bullet Axle Slot Preparation- For kits with axle slots, the Pro-Body Tool II ensures accurate axle positioning by allowing you to drill accurate axle pilot holes into the existing axle slots with a hand drill.  The pilot holes ensure that the axles are mounted square and true on the car.  Improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater alignment and greater speed!

bullet Axle Hole Drilling- For races which allow axle holes, the Pro-Body Tool II serves as a guide for drilling accurate axle holes with a hand drill.  Again, improved axle mounting accuracy equals greater alignment and greater speed!

bullet Axle Hole Re-drilling- For kits with the screw and 3/8" dowel rod axle system, the Pro-Body Tool II (Model 5148) allows you to accurately re-drill the axle pilot holes.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro-Body Tool II.

Who Moved My Wheels Part II ??

The Pro Body Tool as described above has been one of the more popular tools in the DerbyWorx line of specialty pinewood derby tools.  However, DerbyWorx has taken steps to improve on this terrific tool.  Most homes don't have a drill press so the use of the pro body tool with a hand drill is made for that situation.  The Pro Body Jig however includes the following major improvements:

bullet Axle Slot Preparation- The Pro Body Jig as shown in figure   is a single tool comprising of two Pro Body Tools connected by a metal stem and has adjustable seating for each of the Pro Body Tools.  This way, one can place the block on the tool, adjust the location of each Pro Body Tool with a hex key, lock the tools in place and then cut each of the front and rear holes without removing and re-adjusting the Pro Body Tools.  This allows for a more precise drilling of the front and rear axle holes on the same body line.

bullet Axle Hole Drilling- An added advantage of the Pro Body Tool is that it drills the holes higher in the car body (5/32" from bottom of car body) so the car body and the enclosed weight will sit lower to the track.

See detailed Instructions on using the Pro Body Jig.

Note: (Fully Modified Shaver is cut and filed which leaves scratches on the tool but it is tested and includes the tested wheel as an example of shaved hub before polishing)

(Note: The Pro Hub Tool is required for use with the Pro Outer Hub Shaver)

The Pro Outer Hub Shaver will surely become one of the most popular tools for the 2009/2010 pinewood derby season for the following uses:

  •    Ensures accurate rotation of the wheel by squaring the outer wheel hub to the wheel bore for proper mounting of the wheel on the Pro Wheel Mandrel

  •    Reduces friction between the axle head and the outer wheel hub by eliminating flaws on the outer wheel hub and, most importantly

  •    Removes the step in the outer wheel hub on the "new" BSA wheels which are a potential double friction contact point with the axle head.

(Please note that the Pro Outer Hub Shaver is intended for use on BSA wheels only.  It is not recommended for use on wheels made by any other manufacturer.)

See Instructions on using the Pro Outer Hub Shaver

Note: The Pro Outer Hub Shaver is also available as a fully modified tool which includes not only the filing of the back edge but a shaping of the front edge such that the outer hub is not only shaved but domed as well.  This doming effect reduces the friction between the wheel and the axle head even further.

Recommendation: Get the fully modified shaver with the one wheel already modified and purchase a set of the matched or premium matched wheels and we will include a modified wheel of the same mold number. (Just specify "wheel match" in the comments section of the order form)

Frustrated by axle slots???  Take the guesswork out of working with the standard BSA axle slots!!!

The Pro Axle Guide is designed specifically to insert the axles into the slots consistently in the same location so all 4 wheels will be positioned the same.  This is necessary for proper alignment and increased speeds.

The Pro Axle Guide is designed specifically to insert the axles into the slots consistently in the same location with the proper wheel to body spacing.

  •    Consistent Axle Insertion by ensuring that the axles are mounted in the same manner on all 4 wheels

  •    Establishes consistent wheel to body spacing by establishing the proper gap between the wheel hub and the car body.

  •    Reduces damage to the block by maintaining support of the block during the insertion process.

Polishing the Wheel Bore

To understand why one needs to even think about polishing the inside of the wheel bore, one need only a magnifying glass.  Look inside the wheel bore and you may see just about anything from scratches and pin marks to ridges and indentions.

Polishing the wheel bore will reduce friction by:

bullet Eliminating plastic debris and reducing scratches

bullet Providing an initial polish to the wheel bore

bullet Micro-Gloss- The best abrasive for the wheel bore is a white paste called Micro-Gloss.  Micro-Gloss is a water based liquid abrasive which uses a one micron aluminum oxide crystal to remove hairline scratches.  It will create a clean, scratch free environment for your axles.

bullet    Micro-Finish is the perfect finishing touch for polishing the wheel bore.  It is a non-abrasive polish used to provide the high lustre and ultra low friction  you need to dominate!
